I'm can relate to your Uncle. He wants a ride that is not common & he'd be excited to see every morning when he wakes up. Consider also the Kia Sorento, a sibling of the Sta Fe. It shares the same diesel engine as the Sta Fe without the fancy gizmos. It is also much cheaper.

With your short garage in mind. Buget wise i'd go with Suzuki Vitara though my choice would be the Nissan Xtrail for the extra 2seats in case i need it. Gasoline fc would almost be the same with gas engines 6 to 8 kms to a liter on city and 10 to 12kms on hiways. depends on the load, traffic situations and driving habits.
Gas fed are simple and cheaper to maintain also no vibrations, smokes and noise. while diesel fed are more torquey and drinks cheaper fuel but has vibrations, noisier, smoke and is more expensive to maintain specially when major parts needs replacements. Also sensitive with fuels you use.
