So I have a 2 month old black Chevy Cruze. I chose black thinking that the paint reflections would be mirror-like. However, as with most factory paints, there is a little bit of orange peel in the paint. It's not perfectly flat so the reflection is not that good.

I've read that wet sanding and buffing is the solution to orange peel. However, most experts wouldn't recommend wet sanding factory paint because 1) it's thinner than custom paint jobs, and 2) the paint is harder, hence, it would be difficult to buff off the wet sanding marks.

So, an idea crossed my mind.

Why not put on additional layers of clear coat on the factory paint? That way, you would have more thickness in clear coat and thus it would be safe to wet sand.

Is this such a crazy idea?

Another question: Have any of you actually wet sanded factory paint, and would you say it's safe to do so?

Hoping the detailing gurus in this esteemed forum would give their ideas.

Hi bro! Mabuti at naisip mo yan.

Wala orange peel tapos matibay yung clear coat.

Yung orange peel kasi is nasa initial layer ng clear coat so kung papatugan mo ng another layer ng clear coat i wewetsand mo yung new clear coat till ma reach yung border ng 1st layer and 2nd layer at dun mo papantayin.

if i were to choose bet. OEM look with little orange peel or repainted look na walang balat suya, i d go for the oem, maybe wait for couple of yrs or go to a good detailing shop im sure they can help you with a better option with the gloss, iba pa rin ang original look para sa akin, sayang naman kay bago ng auto mo

To wait for a couple of years is also a very good idea. Thank you sir.

hello, its not a crazy idea if you ask me, i have a few friends that have gone through the same process but their reason was to have their car covered with PPG Ceramiclear because they don't want to get too much swirls since they are too busy to take care of their cars and until now their cars are just washed by the usual car washes down the corner, and honestly it turned out quite well, they have a thicker clear coat which would offer more surface for paint correction and until now its still pretty much swirl free, but what they hate about it is that they spent about 20 to 25k just for that, its pretty much already like a washover price i dunno if its because of the clear coat, but i guess it all depends on how far and how much you would go for your new car, i mean my Revo has a Ceramiclear clear coat but honestly i find it a little impractical, why? its true that it has a really tough scratch resistant clear coat but once i get gash by a tricycle its pretty much also straight to the metal, the cost of repairs would also be higher, so in my case it wasn't worth it since the Revo was just a daily drive and semi delivery car, but in my friends' case with their BMW and their Camry it was well worth it because honestly it still looks as good as new even 4 years after, so bottomline for me, if you have the cash to spend and want that extra wet look and more paint to work defects then i would go for it, but if you're on a tight leash then i would just save the money and save it for a wash over, but if its me i don't really find it worth it if you just put on regular clear coat since if you add just a little more you get the really tough ones

Thank you for your reply. Very helpful insights there.

Will the regular swirl removers and rotary buffer be able to remove swirl marks off PPG Ceramiclear? Thanks for telling me about this tough clear coat.

Any recommended shops?

Yeah but I think it doesn't look nice on a dark car. Well, we all have our preferences.

I don't think wet sanding + re spraying of clear will do any good.

Maybe using a heavy/med compound will remove/lessen it.

question lang mga sir, ano ba cause ng orange peel effect? dahil ba sa planta ang painting ng brand new cars kaya orange peel anf finish at di kaya gayahin ng paint shops? saan ba pwede magpa repaint ng door na magiging orange peel effect and finish para same as the other doors/panels na orange peel oem effect?

Crazy idea
