Do we really need to make Fuga Island an example like it was the first time in the history of Pinas na me nagugutom just to boost the ratings of these TV stations or to make it look as if the current administration is not doing anything. Sa gate pa lang ng GMA News meron na malamang namamalimos why do they have to go that far? I'm not discounting the fact that its a problem and I'm not discounting the fact that we have problems. My point is our problems are not unique but were still better off than other third world countries who also have similar problems were not at the bottom of the list as some people in the media or opposition paint our situation to be. Maganda tong discussion natin dito maraming good ideas, maybe we should open up a separate forum entitled "If you were the President of RP how do you solve the following problems".

Pardon me, pero honestly you should be reminded about poverty in the country. Malawakang kahirapan at kagutuman. Read the Sumilao Farmers plight then i-multiply it in millions --ang ganyan ang nangyayari dito sa pInas.

Surveys and Fuga island report must be shown to remind Pinoys about the massive and incessant poverty problem in the country. Kasi Pinoy madaling makalimot.Minsan alang pakialam.

dyan sa america, rare ang massive poverty. So yung sample mong nagmamalimos, normal yun sa lahat ng bansa. pero yung dito sa pinas, yung milyong tao nakondena na sa kahirapan (no lands, no property, limited oportunities) na hindi makaalis sa kahirapan at nadadagdagan pa dahil sa maling economic policies. Abnormal yun.

Walang direksyon.

Plain and simple, kulelat na tayo.

After being second to Japan and the leading country in Asia before, we are just contented of being lumped with Bangladesh and other least developed country? being mentioned by World Bank as one of the countries vulnerable to food riots tulad ng haiti? Hailed as the most corrupt country in Asia today?

I always hope for a more progressive Philippines.

Again, im doing this because im hoping these problems will be given attention not only by the government but all Pinoys.

Anyway, Im always dreaming and in my own small way working for the betterment of the country.

indeed, there is a need to have a discussion about how we can solve problems in the Philippines.

Of course, in the auto industry, help from the government and the private sector to revive the true local auto industry. Tsikot is doing it, in its own small way....

Im definitely convinced unang solusyon sa problema natin ay matapos na ang bulok na administrasyon ni Gloria sa 2010 (hay ang tagal.....di bale at least 2 years na lang) so that we can elect a new set of leaders with vision and real good plan for this country.

Lahat tayo gusto ng manufacturing and there's nothing wrong with being idealistic but sometimes we forget to be realistic. We cannot compete when it comes to labor-intensive industries. If we want manufacturing to come back. We have to lower the inputs to production. We can also go for higher productivity to offset the labor cost advantage of these countries but that is more a company management problem than a government policy problem. Are there any shoe factories in Marikina who practice lean manufacturing like a Nike contractor in China inspite of the fact that they're already competitive or upgrade with modern machineries to boost their productivity and quality? Saka isa pa yung $36B na reserves natin its not there para ipagmayabang. Its just another figure that Central Banks all over the world are required to publish to indicate how much money is left to pay for their import bills. Generally the ideal figure practiced by most Central Banks is for 3 mos. worth of imports because its not necessarily ideal to have very large reserves either. So anyone who is expecting a reserve to cover a year's worth of imports has too high an expectation coz its not the norm but more of an exception. To think that this figure is just there for bragging rights is to have perception problems rather than objectivity. In the same vein, Does the poor Shanghai Chinese sleeping in cardboard boxes or the Hongkong Chinese sleeping in a 2 sqm metal cage care about China's $1 Trillion dollars in reserves? China is planning to put up 10 Nuclear Power plants. Sabi ng pinoy ayoko nyan takot ako baka sabog radiation. Etong epekto.

    1). Power cost - China $0.05 per KW/h , Pinas - $0.11 per KW/h

    2). Labor Cost - Vietnam - $50/ month , Myanmmar - $20 / month

Vietnam's target for actual investments materialized for 2008 is $8 Billion. RP Remittance from OFW this year is projected to reach $15 Billion. Its nice to be idealistic but sometimes we forget to be realistic. The Americans hated Intel for moving their plants sa Pinas. Should we feel the same with Vietnam? Is there anything that would prevent Intel from transferring to Africa if Vietnam is no longer cost competitive? Does Intel have nationalism in their veins or transnationalism? Should the highly nationalistic Koreans hate Samsung and other Korean companies for putting up plants in Pinas rather than in Korea where there's also increasing unemployment for nationalism's sake?

Join the tsikot design team. perhaps, in our own small way we can start some positive changes.
Although TambayBlues has yet to respond to our invites to join the design team, he has been very helpful with his posts, especially links to useful information and software. As ehnriko said, we do appreciate his inputs.

On a personal note, I, too, am learning significantly from your intelligent exchange. Keep it up, guys.

    *TambayBlues,

Based on your post, it appears you are not based in the Philippines. I would just like to let you know you don't have to be in the Philippines to join our group. A lot of the guys are based overseas, too. And thanks for your various informative posts. BR

Dapat magsimula lagi sa pagiging idealistic sir. I-tame lang ng pagiging realistic. Great breakthroughs and inventions came out from this process.

Plain and simple walang direksyon ang pamahalaan. Walang national policy on food self-sufficiency.

We cannot compete when it comes to labor-intensive industries. If we want manufacturing to come back. We have to lower the inputs to production. We can also go for higher productivity to offset the labor cost advantage of these countries but that is more a company management problem than a government policy problem.
But labor cost is just one factor.

Everything is State-controlled. controlled ng gobyerno. So it is easy to contain inflation, subsidized food costs (communal farm lands).

Are there any shoe factories in Marikina who practice lean manufacturing like a Nike contractor in China inspite of the fact that they're already competitive or upgrade with modern machineries to boost their productivity and quality? .
Meron, are you familiar with contractualization? Per piece ang bayad. o 5 months contract lang. o apprentice who are paid 75% below minimum wage.

Saka isa pa yung $36B na reserves natin its not there para ipagmayabang. Its just another figure that Central Banks all over the world are required to publish to indicate how much money is left to pay for their import bills. Sana nga ganun. E problema at the height ng ZTE puro press release ang BSP na we have the highest GIR in recent years. Ang press release isang linggo paulit ulit. Malinaw they are painting a rosy picture e sa tutuo lang puro OFW galing yun. For the meantime. Bakit a super sensitive commodity msut be taxed?

    I
n the same vein, Does the poor Shanghai Chinese sleeping in cardboard boxes or the Hongkong Chinese sleeping in a 2 sqm metal cage care about China's $1 Trillion dollars in reserves?
Yes, they care. pero may magagawa ba sila?Hongkong at Shanghai pa yan a. Paano yung nasa interior China? Inner Mongolia?Tibet? mas maraming mahirap dun 3 times ng buong population ng PInas (270 million ba? of the 1.3 billion).

China is planning to put up 10 Nuclear Power plants. Sabi ng pinoy ayoko nyan takot ako baka sabog radiation. Etong epekto.
Yung ZTE $ 329 million, di bale puro equipment yun e hindi more than half, bribe at tongpats e.

    1). Power cost - China $0.05 per KW/h , Pinas - $0.11 per KW/h

    2). Labor Cost - Vietnam - $50/ month , Myanmmar - $20 / month

May geothermal energy tayo. Largely untapped pa, kasi volcanic islands tayo. Remember 2nd largest tayo after the USA sa geothermal. May natural gas o cng tayo sa malampaya at galoc. Coal. ala tayo uranium dito. Pero dami ebs dito na pakalatkalat (WB survey lack of toilets in the Philippines)for biomass meron.

Dapat tayong mainggit. maraming may trabaho at may totoon production dun.

Conspicuous consumption.May kalaguyo si mister at si misis. Broken family. Exploitation and abuses of OFWs abroad.

Vietnam's target for actual investments materialized for 2008 is $8 Billion.
Dapat mainggit. More employment, income and industrial capability to Vietnamese and Vietnam. More taxes and revenues to the government. More socio-economic infrastructures to the nation and its people.

RP Remittance from OFW this year is projected to reach $15 Billion.
Yup. apaw ang pinas ng latest na all imported mp3,mp4, mp5,mp6,m16, playstation 1,2 ,3-10, celphone na may camera at refrigerator, iphone, ipod, lcd tv,plasma tv, sportcars, mazda 3, toyota innogag, magandang bahay. After 2 months benta uli kasi walang pamasahe pabalik.

Limited freedom.

Its nice to be idealistic but sometimes we forget to be realistic.
Kaya dapat idealistic at realistic. Lalo yung Injustice secretary, National Insecurity Adviser etc.

Intel, Samsung have one common denominator. They massively invested first in their country of origin before doing some overseas expansion (new markets). Bakit magagalit koreans and Americans sa tNCs or MNCs nila e symbol ng economic might nila yan. Headquarters pa rin sa home country. Meaning profits are repatriated pa rin sa mother unit sa US and Korea. Intel dito no transfer of technology, labor lang. Same with Samsung. samsung nga re-invested in Korea profits made around the world.

I visited a website a long time ago. I forgot the exact web address and the name is ****intel something. It was put up by ex-Intel employees na galit dahil nawalan sila ng trabaho dahil part of the reason is nilipat yung plant sa Cavite. Intel is a transnational corporation who's only loyalty lies with their shareholders and not with their flag.

As an answer to a post regarding the nuclear plants, ang mas applicable satin na technology is magnetically levitated windmill developed recently by China. Ang efficiency rating nya is similar to nuclear but at a fraction of the cost and environmentally friendly pa. The major resistance kasi with nuclear is yung disposal nung nuclear waste. And as another tidbit yung Bataan Nuclear Power Plant parang latter part lang nung last year nabayaran utang natin don. It took us that long and it didnt even light a single lightbulb. What a waste.

yup, i agree mas ok windmill--clean and safe energy. delikado kasi waste ng nuclear plant.

Westinghouse and Disini (Marcos crony) where responsible for this defective Bataan plant. Sayang $2billion dollar. At yung real estate gawing ala rockwell (former thermal plant)

I think there is already an urgency to look for alternative energy and fuel. Sobra na ang oil prices.Masyadong manipulated na price.

I think our country has the opportunity to go into the production of vehicles using alternative fuels (CME/cocodiesel/biofuel).

Walang mawawala sa atin. No very big auto factories to retool. We can use auto parts and components readily available in the market with some modification.

We need just to streamline the jeepneys and eliminate some unnecessary load/weight to make them more efficient.

Im still hoping that the remaining local native assemblers/fabricator will improve their auot products so that more Pinoys will take a look again.

Yung lean manufacturing is more a function of productivity and or efficiency than labor cost alone. It sprang out of Japanese continuous improvement methods. Contractualization is targetted more towards avoiding benefits. Everybody knows that when you become a regular employee you have more benefits under the law it has nothing to do with productivity. Even advanced countries practice it to avoid giving benefits to their employees. If you cannot compete in the low end then go for the higher end. Design also comes into play and that is our advantage kaya nabubuhay pa rin ang Cebu furniture industry kasi me differentiating factor sila although they are also facing tough competition even in their export markets. It would be similar when making shoes or automobiles. You have to know your niche so to speak.

FINALLY! You hit the target! Yan ang sinasabi ko!

Mahirap ang sobrang laki. Take the case of GM and Ford, they have to shed excess fats to become more competitive. Ford also.

Find the niche, yun ang battle cry. In this thread, the PHUV or utility vehicles are given attention, certified workhorse and best selling vehicle type in the country.

Saan ba magaling an pinoy, sa auv or Utility vehicle.

There is always a potential kailangan lang i-focus sa local needs natin.

In the end, the local jeepneys and auvs will still reign.

    Bilog ang mundo.

Yeah, I agree with you NICHE is one of the most critical factors in the success of any business especially in a market with so many competitors. Most of the big boys in the auto business would rather leave the low end to smaller manufacturers coz for them the size of the market in RP and the profit margins are not attractive enough to pursue high volume manufacturing which is their expertise. Maiba tayo, have you guys heard of Dieless NC Forming, I believe this technology if acquired by our manufacturers would enable them to produce low volume car body stamping parts without the use of dies or hulmahan in tagalog. Mahal kc magpagawa ng stamping dies coz of the tryout process involved which is a trial and error process. Although CAD/CAM software nowadays are sophisticated enough to employ simulation to reduce this time consuming method I'm just not aware if our manufacturers even use these tools which are practically off the shelf. I believe conventional CNC milling machines can be retrofitted to do Dieless Forming. Kung wala rin silang order they can use it to provide car body repair services or for aftermarket body parts with the aid of reverse engineering software by scanning the undamaged body part. They only need to save the scanned 3D Model files. Here's a link to this technology and more software download links.
