The disadvantages of the OTJ comes from its jeep military origins - good for hauling heavy loads off-road but over-designed for civilian on-road use:

    1) cramped seating position for the passengers at the back (because of short wheelbase).
    2) heavy ladder frame.
    3) crude solid axle (front) and live axle (rear).

In a way, past utility vehicles such as the Mini Moke and the Sakbayan were more advanced than the OTJ. Both had 4-wheel independent suspension and more comfortable seating for the rear passengers. The Moke had a box-section frame with front and rear subframes.

So I see the future OTJ as not for extreme off-roading but more for on-road use with good highway performance but will be capable of running on rough provincial roads and flooded city streets. It should be comfortable for long distance travel.

This may annoy the jeep purists but here goes. I'd like the future OTJ to:

    1) be based on a front-wheel-drive car platform with longer wheelbase. The front engine, rear wheel drive Toyota Avanza platform is also a possibility.
    2) have adeqaute ground clearance and 4-wheel independent suspension like a Honda CRV or Toyota RAV4 (live rear axle in case of Avanza platform).
    3) have a box-section frame (lighter than a ladder frame)
    4) be built as strong as a VW Type 181.
    5) (while we're dreaming, we might as well go all the way) interconnected suspension like the Citroen 2CV ("able to drive across a ploughed field without breaking the eggs it was carrying") and the Africar.

Late 80s and to the early 90s, a Ho-ner is my ride. Vintage owner na siya. 70s pa yung registration niya. Buhay pa yung owner at nasa Quezon. Malabon-type body daw siya kasi makapal at hindi gawa sa GI sheet. Toyota 2t ang engine pero low gear daw ang transmission or differential kaya mabagal pero kayang magsakay ng 20+ peeps. :D

pakita ko lang yung specialized jeep ko. it is about 30 yrs old the plate# starts from N (tama ba 70"s pa yun?). i bought from my bayaw on 2001 'coz may highlander na sya at di na ginagamit. the problem is i could not drive manual xmission cars kasi my right leg is afflicted with polio. so what i did i extended the brake and the accelator to be controlled by right hand (try ko attached pics). ok naman nagamit ko sya everyday plaridel-quezon city. ang malayo ko na tavel were antipolo and calatagan, batangas.
napalitan na ang body and i painted it myself, practice ba! the engine is 4K.

OT: Sir may polio din ang husband ng cousin ko... ang he is driving a Multicab with the same config sa Jeep mo... He was on a Jeep before but then nag roll-over kasi lasing...

Anyway, back to topic, in my opinion, Jeeps have always been a part of every Filipino, lahat nakasakay ng Jeep pero problem lang sa Pinoy na mayayaman today, they descriminate OTJ too far.

Welcome nga pala to tsikot, eyshmechanic. Galing nung conversion mo, pards. Wanna shake your hand, pero malakas masyado siguro yung grip mo. Kung may sentimental value, di ba dapat binyagan mo ng pangalan yung OJT mo? May pangalan ba siya?
