The Audi A4 sedan competes with the BMW 3-series sedan
The Audi A5 coupe competes with the BMW 3-series coupe

Remember, the A5 is based on the A4.

Even their pricing is not too far apart.
In the US, the A4 2.0T Quattro starts at $32,850, the A5 2.0T Quattro starts at $36,500.

The BMW 6-series is in a higher segment which Audi doesn't directly compete in.
In the US the 6-series starts at $78,450 for the 650i.

The next gen 6-series is expected to have a 4-door coupe version based on the Gran Coupe Concept car, this will compete with the CLS and upcoming Audi A7.

It really is the 3-series coupe. The 6-series is a much bigger car than the A5. I see an A5 in our school's parking lot daily and it just looks like an A4 coupe, which it really is.

The 6-series is more of a competitor to the CLS. They're both big coupes, just that the CLS has 2 more doors.

*my_BMW, the displacement of the turbocharged engines (N55B30/N54B30) found in the 135i, 335i and sdrive35i is 2979cc which is rounded of to 3000cc or 3.0 liters.

If you don't plan to stuff adults at the rear for long distances, th 135i coupe would be a nice alternative, thats pure classic BMW there, compact and light like the classic BMW 2002 and early 3-series models.

PS: The M-version of the 1-series won't be called M1 because that name is sacred for BMW (M1 is the original M, and its a mid-engined supercar.)
The M-version of the 1-series coupe will be called "1 Series M Coupe".
    Teaser shot
thanks for all the info guys. i have seat on the 1 series M coupe already and its awesome. however i would like to set my eyes on the M3 if at all i want an M version BMW. For me M3 is the best looking car way beyond the Audi A5.
