if it had leaked, obviously the refrigerant pressure would be less. the air conditioner will not perform at its optimum or never operate at all. if the system had been leaking and been "topped off" a couple of times, chances are the amount of moisture introduced into the system would be enough to saturate the receiver/dryer. if you are not skimping on the expense and don't want to second guess as to when it will not work properly, it is wise to have the system serviced, expansion valve replaced, receiver/dryer replaced and the compressor drained and changed
