General Motors is in the process of auctioning off what it can from the shell of its old company, giving plenty of other businesses and individuals a first-hand glimpse inside The General’s old manufacturing plants. Popular Mechanics stopped by an auction at the old Pontiac Assembly East facility to see exactly what was going under the gavel and who was there to snap up the old tools of the trade. As you might expect, there were plenty of resellers there to buy large lots to be parceled out to individual buyers at a later date.
But interestingly enough, there were also a handful of former GM employees there with an eye toward coming home with a piece of their former work life. Everything from the massive, spot-welding robots that we’ve all seen flailing around in synchronous motion to the very work benches, lockers and tools that employees used during their tenure at the plant went out the door and into the hands of their new owners.
The whole PM piece is worth a read, if for no other reason than David Kiley’s haunting descriptions of the dead plant. Take a look.
