What Are You Willing To Sacrifice For A Low Price?

The compact car industry is white-hot. The new Ford Concentrate, Chevrolet Cruze and Hyundai Elantra have lifted the segment to new levels of refinement even though at the identical time improving fuel economic climate to 40 miles per gallon on the highway and beyond. V is for Versa, and Nissan would like you to believe that its 2012 Versa also stands for volume, value, virtues, versatility and, since we’re out of Vs, sophistication. While other automakers have been out to redefine the idea of the compact car as something hip and sporty – no longer the moped of cardom – Nissan developed this Versa “to redefine compact car value, giving buyers everything they want and need in one stylish package.”

That means the Versa makes math arguments, not emotional ones. It wants to give you more than you’ll get elsewhere and not make you feel bad about going for its attributes instead of allure. As the segment sales leader, that argument has been working for years. Yet with other manufacturers adding new variables, we went to Seattle to see if the Versa still makes a case for itself.

And it does… if you like numbers.

We’re not touching the car vs. bike argument this time around. Instead, we’re just going to sit back, relax, and be glad people had their video cameras pointed in the general direction of the Suzuki GSX1300R (known better as the Hayabusa) and the Nissan GT-R Switzer R850 as they lined up against each other in a mile-long drag race.

According to the video, the Hayabusa in question belts out 198 horsepower. That’s a heck of a lot of power strapped between two wheels, but it pales in comparison to the 850 claimed ponies routed to all four tires of the modified GT-R.

So… what does that mean in terms of a drag race? We suggest you watch the clip after the break to find out for yourself.

Now that we’ve seen the updated Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Malibu, not to mention the already-on-fire Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima, it’s time for the rest of the mid-size sedan players to freshen up their offerings. Nissan looks to follow suit later this year with the all-new 2013 Altima, which our spy photographers recently caught testing with a very revealing camouflage treatment.

Up front, the new headlights and grille take a swoopier shape, as do the foglights below. (Squint, and you may see a bit of Hyundai Genesis in that front end – just sayin’.) Out back, the taillights get a similar dose of rakishness, probably akin to what we’ve been seeing on Nissan’s latest designs – the Maxima, 370Z and Juke.

Reports have indicated that Nissan will offer a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the Altima, and if so, it’s unclear whether or not the older, 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four will stick around. Expect the 3.5-liter V6 to still be the range-topping powerplant, with six-speed transmissions (manual and CVT) to be offered throughout the range.

Even the humble Nissan Juke isn’t immune to the recent epidemic of Black Edition models we’ve seen spread across the automotive landscape; Nissan has just announced the limited-edition Juke Kuro available only to UK buyers. Meaning “black” in Japanese, the Kuro comes equipped with 17-inch gloss black wheels, black door mirrors and handles for a sleeker appearance. Buyers will be able to drape their hatch in either Force Red or Pearl Black paint, though Nissan only plans to roll out 700 of the vehicles to maintain exclusivity.

Prices start at £17,395 ($28,700 at current conversion rates) for the 1.6-liter four-cylinder, though a direct-injection turbocharged variant is also available for £18,995. Both models are on sale right in the UK right now. Hit the jump to check out the full press release.

Nissan is facing a rash of complaints about automatic transmission failures in the company’s trucks and SUVs, according to The New York Times. Certain 2005-2010 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra models may have an issue with their radiators which could cause coolant to mix with the automatic transmission fluid. That’s not supposed to happen, and it could cause premature failure. Nissan, meanwhile, has extended its warranty coverage on the radiators and any component damaged as a result of the fault, though owners say that they’ve been stuck with expensive transmission repair bills after the extended warranty dries up. The new coverage extends to 80,000 miles.

The NYT reports that Nissan extended its radiator coverage in October of last year after the company discovered that internal oil cooler tubes may crack and leak. The Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association, meanwhile, says that the radiator coolant tanks themselves are rupturing, which then allows the fluid to mix with coolant before being pumped back into the transmission.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received upwards of 200 complaints on the issue, though it’s still unclear at this point whether or not the government agency is looking into the problem. For its part, Nissan has said that if the problem occurs on vehicles still within the 80,000 mile radiator warranty, any transmission repairs would also be included in the coverage.

There was a time when body-on-frame SUVs dominated American roads, with nearly every major automaker offering some kind of four-wheeling fighter to suburbia’s off-road pretenders. Nissan was no different, and at its peak in 2000, the eminently capable Xterra sold some 88,000 copies – the same year our colleagues at Motor Trend crowned it Sport Utility of the Year.

But unlike so many hardened off-roaders that have evolved into unibody crossovers, the Xterra has soldiered on nearly unchanged since its refresh in 2005. And according to our sources, this latest variant – the Pro-4X – could be the last of an orphaned breed. We got our hands on Nissan’s most capable SUV for a week of highway drudgery, big-box shopping and even a little time off the beaten path to find out if it deserves to live on.

Nissan Motor Philippines, Inc. (NMPI) recently hailed Nissan Westgate Alabang and Royce Motor Center, Inc. as the Dealer of the Year for Metro Manila and Provincial, respectively, during the company’s 2011 Dealer Conference.

The Dealer of the Year award is NMPI’s highest recognition given to a dealership with the most exemplary performance in all aspects of dealership operations, including sales, service, parts and customer relations management.

This is the first time that Royce Motor Center, Inc. received the award, while Nissan Westgate Alabang has previously won the prestigious title three times.

During the dealer conference, themed “Moving in Synergy,” NMPI also gave away the following recognitions: Best in Sales to Nissan Westgate Alabang (Metro Manila) and Nissan Bacolod (provincial); Best in Service to Nissan North Edsa (Metro Manila) and Nissan Iloilo (provincial); Most Improved in Service to Nissan United Nations and Nissan Cebu Distributors, Inc. (provincial); Best in Parts to Nissan Gallery Quezon avenue (Metro Manila) and Royce Motor Center, Inc. (provincial).

Nissan Gallery Ortigas and Nissan Iloilo also received citations in financial management for Metro Manila and provincial, respectively.

In addition to the awarding, the NMPI management, led by its president and chief executive officer Allen Chen, highlighted the collective accomplishments of NMPI and its whole dealer network in terms of marketing, sales and after-sales. To further strengthen the Nissan brand’s presence in the market, NMPI also presented its strategies and action plans for this year.

A 17-year-old girl from Fort Myers, Florida allegedly pistol-whipped her mother into buying her a 2004 Nissan 350Z last week. The teen, an Ivy League-bound honor student at the prestigious Canterbury School, reportedly lost control when her mother refused to co-sign on the car.

According to the Naples Daily, Rachel Ann Hachero went home after her mother’s refusal grabbed a 9mm Sig Sauer pistol, hit her mother with it, and demanded she accompany her to the dealership. Not wanting to get shot, the mother complied and signed off on the purchase. The next day, while her daughter was at school, the mother recovered the gun and drug paraphernalia from the girl’s purse and called the police.

Hachero’s mom says she doesn’t want to press charges because of her daughter’s Ivy League scholarships, but a judge says Hachero must remain in juvenile detention for the time being. The girl has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, unlawful possession of a firearm by a person younger than 18 and battery. To make matters worse, the gun was found to be one of three stolen from a Lee County, Florida Port Authority employee last July. Top tip, Berto!
