Thousands of people trooped to the World Trade Center for the first day of the Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) on Thursday (April 7).

The 7th edition of the show attracted over 30 global car brands, from the affordable ones to the more luxurious.

Event organizers said they also included upgraded green cars in this year’s expo.

“Since we are going for an eco-friendly, more sustainable future for the car industry, I think Chery is promoting its electric car. And some of the famous brands here as well will be presenting their hybrids. A few brands would be launching new models,” said Jon Richmond Ang, marketing director of Worldbex, organizer of MIAS.

This auto show is a veritable dreamland for car enthusiasts.

Many of the vehicles here were launched for the first time in the Philippines.

There are also icons such as the Mini, Maserati Gran Turismo, and a Porsche, similar to the model reportedly bought by President Benigno Aquino III.

Aside from commercial cars, a vehicle targeted for the military was also revealed.

Philippine Navy chief Rear Admiral Alexander Pama himself inspected the prototype amphibious vehicle which was proudly made by Filipinos.

“It looks nice and the best part of it is it’s Filipino-made. If in case it would fit the requirements of the Navy and if we would have the resources for it, I would like to have one of this,” said Pama.

Pama said that this kind of vehicle suits the country’s terrain, and added that the Navy is currently upgrading its fleet.

“We’re upgrading the Navy in general para no matter where it is required may kakayanan tayong pangalagaan ‘yung ang ating maritime resources be it in Spratlys, Sulu Sea, or wherever,” Pama said.

Renowned British driver Russ Swift, a 3-time Guinness World Record holder, also showed audiences his skill in driving, from drifting to precision driving.

The auto show will last until Sunday (April 10).

Hey, car lovers. Nothing to do this week? Why not drop by World Trade Center in Pasay City.

On April 7, 8, 9 and 10, the biggest local motoring event of the year will be staged with new models from a long line of car makers set to be introduced to the public.

Known as the Manila International Auto Show, the event will also feature side shows, including the highly successful BPI Family Savings Bank Auto Madness.

To accommodate the big number of participants and visitors, organizers said the event will be held in a more spacious venue.

Annually staged at the World Trade Center, the venue has grown to 23,000 square meters, enough to accommodate the 28 auto and motorcycle brands taking part in the show that was launched in 2005.

This year, aside from the World Trade exhibition hall and lobby of 10,000M2 and the 3,000M2 East Wing annex building and some 6,000M2 of outdoor exhibit and stunt performance area. Organizers have added almost 4,000M2 of exhibition floor space of the Philippine Trade Training Center.

In all, the total outdoor and indoor exhibition floor area is 23,000M2, making the event the biggest annual motoring event in the country today.

To a lot of people, one of the biggest come-ons is the BPI Family Auto Madness, which has come a long way since it was launched in Cebu City 13 years ago.

Coming from a meek gathering of 16 cars on display in 1998, the Auto Madness continues to enjoy tremendous success year on eyar.

This year, as BPI celebrates its 160th year leading in the financial and banking industry, it stays true to its promise of innovation and leadership as it takes the level of ‘Madness’ several notches higher.

Motor Image Pilipinas (MIP), the exclusive distributor of Subaru, has announced that it will be showcasing the complete model line-up at the upcoming Manila International Auto Show on April 15 to 18 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. World renowned precision driver Russ Swift will also put to the test the Subaru Impreza again when he returns to showcase his trademark daredevil maneuvers.

This will be the first motor show that Motor Image will be showcasing its all-new model lineup led by the new Subaru Outback and Legacy range, which were introduced in the market last November. Perhaps the longest-running auto show in the country, the Manila International Auto Show (Mias), organized by the Worldbex group under the auspices of Joseph Ang, has now celebrated its fifth year in another grand fashion.

Performing for the annual car show again is world Guinness record holder for precision driving Russ Swift, who wowed the crowd during the four-day affair that lasted from April 2 to 4.

Pulling in a little under 100,000 visitors from all walks of life, the Mias has been the most consistent car show in the country, coming out with an annual event since 2005, even after all the other competitors have folded and gone dry.

The most visible supporter for this year was Motor Image Pilipinas (MIP), dealer of the country’s fastest-growing auto brand, Subaru. Nicky Mariano, head of the MIP, said, “Mias has been one of our staunchest supporters and it is only fitting that we return the favor.”

Glenn Tan, president of Motor Image, was present at the launch of the new Subaru Impreza, which was used by Swift for his exhibition at the Mias and still showing what a Subaru can do.

Ford Group Philippines was amply represented, with its exhibit and presence of Glen Dasig, vice president for sales of FGP.

Top Gear Philippines also launched its latest offering to the motoring public. Vernon Sarne, Top Gear editor in chief, has tasked Barbara Lorenzo, managing editor of Top Gear online, to create a site that car lovers would definitely visit. This was launched on the first-day festivities. The Petron Car of the Year was also very visible along with the Subaru STI prominently displayed in the lobby of the World Trade Center.

This year, Mias was dominated by Chinese brands like Lifan, Foton, Chery, Great Wall Motors and more. A few of the mainstream manufacturers like Honda, Isuzu, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler were represented, most if not all by their dealers instead of their main principal.

A report reached the BusinessMirror  that the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (Campi) had allegedly discouraged its members from participating in the Mias. Sources from within Campi said there are now factions inside the organization who are at odds on how their events, activities and participation in such events as the Mias should be handled. The same sources also said that a rift has developed between a group consisting of Chinese brands and the Japanese conglomerate, which has been dubbed by industry insiders as the “Yakuza-Triad competition.”

This development comes on the heels of an announcement made by Campi during a press conference held in December last year that the second edition of the Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS) would not push through in 2009 due to the current global financial meltdown.

Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza said, “This competition between Campi and private auto organizations is not doing the automotive industry any good.”

This writer sought the side of Campi through its president, Elizabeth Lee, who said, “Campi never issued a ban on the participation of its members in the Mias. In fact, several of the dealers who are involved in the Mias even received funding from their principals in order to participate in the event.”

Ang, meanwhile, said, “We are very pleased with the outcome of the motor show and we expect that the Mias will be giving service to the people and be of help to the consumer.”

After this year’s Mias, Ang said they plan to expand next year’s program to make it more entertaining and informative. He was also hopeful that the situation with PIMS this year would improve and that they could work together for the development of the Philippine auto industry.

With Mias on a roll on its fifth year, and with a definite cooperation with the auto industry, we may just have a crack at being the future automotive hub in Southeast Asia.

The 2008 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) held annually in the World Trade Center, attracts local motoring enthusiasts who come out in droves to see the sexiest cars and the hottest models; and the Mazda booth definitely had fine examples of both. The highlight of the Mazda MX-5 launch, hosted by the svelte Sarah Meier, was the moment of the grand reveal, at which point two mysterious models pulled down their hoods simultaneously with the Mazda MX-5’s Retractable Hard Top revealing drop-dead gorgeous looks. The audience stunned by what they saw erupted in applause. The models, of course, had their share of admiring glances as well.
