Playing a racing game on the big screen can sometimes feel a bit like the real thing, but what happens when the screen is larger than life? Hyundai has created a new iPhone driving game for the Veloster that is interactive on a level that most gamers can only dream of.

If you happen to be in Times Square between now and the end of the year, you can play the game on the massive LED screen on 47th Street and Broadway. In fact, there are a pair of video screens, so up to two players can play at once. We’re guessing this screen beats the two-player setup on most 70-inch LED television screens at home.

For a car company that pays 30 per cent tariff on passenger vehicles but gets from the mother company subsidy in South Korea, Hyundai Asia Resources surprises competitors by slowly increasing its share of the market from 12 per cent when it started in 2001 to 20 per cent last year.

Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, who was in real estate before she joined Hyundai Asia Resources and rose steadily to become president and chief executive officer, admits that the firm does not make that much of a profit.

She told a press gathering that Hyundai has slowly risen to become the No. 3 largest auto company in the Philippines although it is the latest participant in the domestic market.

Hyundai is now the No. 3 carmaker in the world after Toyota and Ford of the United States.

Obviously, the company is able to subsidize the Philippine market since it makes so much from the worldwide operations, although Agudo said there are a few other countries which get price subsidy.

The strategy is to become No. 1 in the Philippines after the 30 percent tariff is completely hauled down to zero under the Asean-Korea free trade area.

The deceleration of tariff from 30 to 20 and zero by 2016 is a function of a trade agreement between the Philippines and South Korea, according to Agudo.

The company hardly uses domestic content in the 12 models used in the Philippines. It is basically a direct importer. Agudo estimates that only about 1 percent local content is used. The local parts are used in interiors.

Asked why it prefers to import in the face of a stiff tariff, Ms. Agudo explained that the Philippines, the automotive technology in the Philippines is still low by the standards of the mother company.

Importation also cuts costs as the company has a labor force of only 150. If it had engaged in assembly in the Philippines, payroll costs would have more than doubled.

The payroll savings may not be enough to cover the costs of subsidy and the amounts paid in tariff. In the long run, however, the company aims to be the tough and top automotive company in the Philippines without necessarily continuing the subsidy.

In the mind of Agudo, if Hyundai Asia can survive the 30 per cent tariff through subsidies, it can fight better if the tariff wall is hauled down to zero. The company will be in the same footing as the rest of the car makers in the Asean region.

Thereafter, the competition will be more intense. Agudo pointed out that the prices of Hyundai are competitive, in spite of the stiff tariff of 30 per cent. That could be a result of subsidy from the mother company.

The company is No. 1 in the one-liter market. There is a huge potential demand for the category coming from overseas workers and retiring Filipinos who come home to roost.

Hyundai is in intense competition in design for all the 12 models.

For example, she said, its Sonata, Hyundai’s top of the line in the Philippine market, is actively fighting with the Camry brand of Toyota. Both brands are in the 1.2 liter category. Hyundai’s Starex model is in direct competition with Toyota’s Hi-Ace.

Agudo sees temporary advantages over Toyota. She pointed out that the tsunami that devastated Japan and the floods that left Bangkok under water for a long time, will result in a shortage of supply.

On the other hand, South Korea has not been hit by a damaging natural any calamity. The preoccupation with improvement of technology is an additional advantage. Another is the proximity of the Philippines to South Korea. It takes three days to ship completely built-up units from South Korea to the Philippines. It takes a day or two longer to ship from Bangkok.

She does not find the other imported automobiles –Chevy of the United States, and Subaru of Japan, a threat. The two importers have a small share of two per cent each of the Philippine market.

According to Agudo, the market for cars could very well be flat next year. However, she sees an average growth of 15 per cent a year for five years probably as a result of what is seen as a final solution to the eurozone financial debacle.

Agudo pointed out that design is a key factor in fighting for a larger share of the domestic market. She said that the designs of the 12 models Hyundai sells in the Philippines are acceptable to the consumers as shown by increasing sales in spite of the 30 per cent tariff, tempered somewhat with subsidy.

Car sales in the last 11 months posted a turnaround growing slightly by 1% despite sluggish economic growth as consumers begin spending for the holidays, the local unit of Hyundai Motor Co. said in a statement on Friday.
Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. sales rose to 18,922 units between January and November from 18,696 units for the same period last year thanks to a resurgence in passenger vehicle purchases.

Last month, in effect, marks a recovery for the South Korean automaker after 10-month sales dropped 2% annually to 16,705 units from 17,118 units, the company reporter earlier.

Combined sales of Hyundai Asia, which broke off from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) last year, and the said business group would have narrowed the latter’s 1.9% annual decline to 131,242 units for the 11-month period to a 1.55% decrease to 150,164 units.

In November alone, Hyundai Asia’s car sales soared 40% annually to 2,217 units from 1,822 units a year ago driven by an all-time high of 81% year-on-year growth for passenger cars.

In particular, the passenger segment sold 1,439 units last month against 797 units in 2010. Sales of light commercial vehicles, meanwhile, were nearly flat at flat at 778 units last month from 781 units year-om-year.

Aggregate sales for passenger cars also grew 13% to 9,913 units in November from 8,761 units last year. Commercial units, on the other hand, fell 9% to 9,009 units from 9,935 units for the same year-on-year comparison.

Sales of Hyundai rose by 40% year-on-year in November to 2,217 units from 1,578 units, driven by an all-time high 81% growth in the highly competitive passenger car category.

“As we finish the year with a positive growth, we look forward to promising prospects in 2012. We will remain committed to sustaining our efforts to surprise car buyers with new value propositions and actively respond to our customers’ needs,” said Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, Hyundai Asia president and chief executive officer, in a statement.

Hyundai Asia is the third bestselling vehicle in the local market after Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. which reported a 2.9% annual growth to 30,175 units from January-November.

Ford Motor Company Philippines, Inc. is a close fourth with sales growing 34.3% annually to 11,653 units for the same period.

Korean auto manufacturer Hyundai is looking at building an automobile manufacturing plant in the country as part of its regional integration in the ASEAN.

In an interview with reporters at the sidelines of yesterday’s Philippine Korea Business Forum at the Manila Hotel yesterday, Richard L. Lee chairman emeritus Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI) said they are now in the process of identifying which model in the Hyundai line they can build here in the Philippines.

“We are in talks for a manufacturing plant in the Philippines because that is for the ASEAN regional integration,” Lee explained.

Lee said that aside from the Philippines, the other countries which are part of the regional integration are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

“We are looking forward to this regional integration,” Lee said. Although Hyundai is the third largest seller of vehicles in the country, it does not have a manufacturing plant here yet.

Lee explained that each country that is part of the regional integration will produce certain models. They are now in the process of selecting which model should be produced in each country.

At the same conference, HARI president Fe Perez Agudo said they have already revised their yearend target for HARI to flat growth. On the other hand, for the Alliance of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID), Agudo said the growth will be five percent. Agudo is also the president of AVID and Hyundai is the largest member of the group.

AVID maintained a positive growth target after a slight increase in sales for the first 10 months of 0.1 percent to 20,340 units. Sales of vehicle importers bucked the declining trend in auto sales as they posted an 18 percent increase in sales for October when compared to the same month in 2010.

“Strong sales recovery in October bodes well for positive performance of AVID for the remainder of the year with the boost arising from expectations of improved supply condition and favourable consumer outlook on better cashflow prospects triggered by holiday bonuses and overseas remittances,” Agudo said.

Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. (HARI) announced yesterday a 26-percent decline in August sales to 1,419 units from 1,921 units a year ago due to supply limitations.

Passenger car sales dropped substantially, particularly in the sub-compact segment, with the stoppage of Getz model production which recorded marked sales in the prior period. On the other hand, light commercial vehicle sales grew by three percent with the strong performance of Tucson and the H100.

Meanwhile, HARI sold a total of 13,271 units from January to August 2011. This represents a four percent decline from the same period last year. While there was softer growth in the LCV segment, PC sales grew by four percent on the back of significant expansion in the sales of newcomer Hyundai Elantra, Midsize PC bestseller Hyundai Sonata and sports sedan Genesis Coupe.

“Against a slower domestic economy, global market uncertainties and the seasonal weakness of auto sales in August, consumer demand for Hyundai products continues to be resilient as evidenced by growing customer orders,” HARI president and chief executive officer Maria Fe Agudo said in a statement.

“Supply setbacks, however, continue to lag delivery to our customers and dampen our sales growth. For the remainder of the year, we expect that with a more favorable supply situation, we will be able to keep our sales performance on a positive growth track,” she added.

HARI’s sales outlook remains optimistic for the rest of the year with expectations of reduced uncertainty from a stable domestic and global economy, better supply situation and improved consumer outlook from increased consumer liquidity or cash flow from the yuletide bonuses and stronger OFW remittances during the last quarter of the year.

The firm noted that combined with the seasonal downtrend in auto sales for August, global demand-supply gap continues to affect the timeliness of product delivery which in turn leads to increased unmet orders for HARI and deter more positive sales outcomes.

Consumption trends for the first seven months of the year showed that car buyers steadily snapped the new Accent, the new Elantra, the Sonata, and the Genesis Coupe. In August, with fresh supplies of the bestselling Tucson, sales rose by 123 percent or 453 units sold, contributing significantly to the 3 percent growth in total LCV sales. We’re all anxiously waiting to see what Hyundai has up its sleeves for the updated Genesis Coupe, and it looks like we may have a better idea of what’s coming down the line. Gencoupe.com forum member shcboyzone managed to lay hands on a few grainy photos of what’s appears to be the 2013 Genesis Coupe. Is this the real deal? Hard telling. If it is, the sports car will rock styling that’s very similar to what we’ve seen from the Hyundai Accent and Veloster. With a more upright fascia, hexagonal grille and sculpted lights, the similarities are unmistakable.

It looks like the vehicle will also feature unique hood louvers, though it’s unclear from the photos whether or not the pieces are actually functional. Around back, Hyundai has graced the coupe with a set of LED tail lamps as well. While this design seems to dovetail fairly closely with the heavily camouflaged mules we’ve seen in testing, we won’t know for sure whether or not this is the real deal until we get closer to the vehicle’s unveil at the next Detroit Auto Show. Three car companies—Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp., Hyundai Asia Resources Inc. and Ford Group Philippines—posted modest sales in the first six months of the year.

MMPC continued turning in robust sales, selling 16,865 units for a 24 percent market share in the first semester and registering a 7.7 percent growth in the same period.

As a result, MMPC became the current market leader in total commercial vehicles with sales of 15,997 for the first semester (based on a year to date figures).

The company’s commercial vehicle sales grew by 10.5 percent from the same period last year. It sold 15,759 light commercial vehicles as well as 238 trucks and buses.

MMPC VP for marketing services Froilan Dytianquin said the company remains positive that MMPC will further increase its sales volume in the second half with coming upgrades and additional variants to its core models.

“However, as Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Japan and Thailand manufacturing plants are working on full capacity due to increasing global demand especially for Montero and Strada models, we shall exert full efforts to be able to serve the market requirements which we anticipate to further pick up in the remaining months,” said Dytianquin.

MMPC’s strong performace in the light commercial category can be attributed to the strong demand and wide market acceptance of the Montero Sports as well as Strada making them bestsellers in the total mid-size SUV and total double cab pick up categories, respectively.

Meanwhile, Hari’s LCV sales hit 5,629 units during this six months period, a slight 3 percent difference from the 5,830 units sold in the same period last year.

Because of strong global demand for the Tucson and Starex model, Hari was only able to deliver 878 units this June, a 24 percent difference from the 1,160 units sold in the same period last year.

Sales of vehicles under the Ford brand in the Philippines surged 63 percent – 3,968 units in the first five months, despite a temporary work stoppage implemented in April and a reduction in production because of the recent crisis in Japan.

According to Ford Group Philippines, sales in May alone jumped 85 percent to 817 units, driven by the strong performance of their Fiesta sub-compact model.

“Sales of the all-new Fiesta are contributing to our strong performance and underscore its strategic role in transforming our business. The Fiesta is attracting a wide range of Filipino customers who appreciate its class-leading style, smart technology, superior fuel efficiency and unmatched safety in a small car,” FGP president Randy Krieger said in a statement.

The FGP sold 324 units of the Fiesta last month, bringing total Fiesta sales to 1,406 units from January to May thus making the brand, FGP’s strongest-selling nameplate.

Sales of FGP’s other strong models, the Everest, increased by 47 percent in May to 226 units. FGP also sold 102 units of the Ranger, an improvement of 38 percent from the same month last year, and 62 units of the Focus.

“We’re continuing to experience strong demand across our full product lineup, and that is contributing to our sales performance. It’s a strong indication that our One Ford strategy is working, and we’re offering the right vehicles in this market that suit a diverse range of Filipino lifestyles and requirements,” Krieger said.

The March 11 earthquake in Japan damaged plants producing crucial auto parts and components as well as critical logistics hubs, effectively causing a disruption in the auto supply chain.

This forced FGP to advanced 18 scheduled down days in April while waiting for the necessary parts and components to be delivered to the country.

According to FGP, the temporary shutdown of its manufacturing facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, was merely precautionary, to ensure that the parts on inventory would be enough to last the company until fresh supplies come in.
