Ford Group Philippines (FGP) was firing on all cylinders in 2011. Sales of vehicles under the Ford brand grew by a formidable 51 percent. Behind the growth were vehicles such as the Fiesta, Everest, Explorer, and Ranger. The Fiesta, for its first full year of sales, sold 3110 units.

The fuel-efficient yet fun-to-drive subcompact was apparently on many a buyer’s shortlist for the year. The Car Awards Group concurred, awarding the Fiesta Best Sub-Compact 2010-2011. Ford ranked second in 2011 JD Power Asia Pacific’s Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) survey for the Philippines.

Also impressive are the 2,769 unit sales of Everest (37 percent increase from 2010), 1019 units of Ranger (+9 percent), and 974 units of Escape. The Explorer, debuting in an all-new version in 2011, notched up a notable 160 percent increase in sales. The Explorer 3.5 V6 Limited is already getting accolades for its driving performance, comfort, style, and best of all, value for money. The Explorer has premium content that can match those of European SUVs twice its price.

Ford chalked up 8,805 unit sales from January to November 2011, boosting market share to 5.8 percent, versus its full-year 2010 market share of 3.9 percent. Ford conducted several major activities for 2011. FGP was the largest exhibitor at the Manila International Auto Show, with its massive 1,000 square-meter display area. The Fiesta and Focus participated in fuel economy runs, including an endurance-style session for the Focus Diesel. The company continued on its advocacy for road safety, with the annual Driving Skills for Life seminars incorporating a practical segment to boost customers’ driving safety skills.

Ford celebrated the first anniversary of the Fiesta launch in October, with a gathering of Fiesta owners at Bonifacio Global City. It also held its annual sales and service skills Olympics in November. Ford capped the year with the 7th annual Henry Ford Awards. PDI writer Tessa Salazar won for Best Automotive Online Feature.

Ford is set to continue on an upward trajectory in 2012, on the heels of three major product launches: the all-new Ranger pickup; the Ford Explorer powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, dubbed the EcoBoost; and perhaps most significantly, the all-new Focus. If the Focus can capitalize on driving pleasure, style, and fuel efficiency as the Fiesta has, the Blue Oval may very well take the compact sedan/hatchback class by storm in 2012.

For a car company that pays 30 per cent tariff on passenger vehicles but gets from the mother company subsidy in South Korea, Hyundai Asia Resources surprises competitors by slowly increasing its share of the market from 12 per cent when it started in 2001 to 20 per cent last year.

Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, who was in real estate before she joined Hyundai Asia Resources and rose steadily to become president and chief executive officer, admits that the firm does not make that much of a profit.

She told a press gathering that Hyundai has slowly risen to become the No. 3 largest auto company in the Philippines although it is the latest participant in the domestic market.

Hyundai is now the No. 3 carmaker in the world after Toyota and Ford of the United States.

Obviously, the company is able to subsidize the Philippine market since it makes so much from the worldwide operations, although Agudo said there are a few other countries which get price subsidy.

The strategy is to become No. 1 in the Philippines after the 30 percent tariff is completely hauled down to zero under the Asean-Korea free trade area.

The deceleration of tariff from 30 to 20 and zero by 2016 is a function of a trade agreement between the Philippines and South Korea, according to Agudo.

The company hardly uses domestic content in the 12 models used in the Philippines. It is basically a direct importer. Agudo estimates that only about 1 percent local content is used. The local parts are used in interiors.

Asked why it prefers to import in the face of a stiff tariff, Ms. Agudo explained that the Philippines, the automotive technology in the Philippines is still low by the standards of the mother company.

Importation also cuts costs as the company has a labor force of only 150. If it had engaged in assembly in the Philippines, payroll costs would have more than doubled.

The payroll savings may not be enough to cover the costs of subsidy and the amounts paid in tariff. In the long run, however, the company aims to be the tough and top automotive company in the Philippines without necessarily continuing the subsidy.

In the mind of Agudo, if Hyundai Asia can survive the 30 per cent tariff through subsidies, it can fight better if the tariff wall is hauled down to zero. The company will be in the same footing as the rest of the car makers in the Asean region.

Thereafter, the competition will be more intense. Agudo pointed out that the prices of Hyundai are competitive, in spite of the stiff tariff of 30 per cent. That could be a result of subsidy from the mother company.

The company is No. 1 in the one-liter market. There is a huge potential demand for the category coming from overseas workers and retiring Filipinos who come home to roost.

Hyundai is in intense competition in design for all the 12 models.

For example, she said, its Sonata, Hyundai’s top of the line in the Philippine market, is actively fighting with the Camry brand of Toyota. Both brands are in the 1.2 liter category. Hyundai’s Starex model is in direct competition with Toyota’s Hi-Ace.

Agudo sees temporary advantages over Toyota. She pointed out that the tsunami that devastated Japan and the floods that left Bangkok under water for a long time, will result in a shortage of supply.

On the other hand, South Korea has not been hit by a damaging natural any calamity. The preoccupation with improvement of technology is an additional advantage. Another is the proximity of the Philippines to South Korea. It takes three days to ship completely built-up units from South Korea to the Philippines. It takes a day or two longer to ship from Bangkok.

She does not find the other imported automobiles –Chevy of the United States, and Subaru of Japan, a threat. The two importers have a small share of two per cent each of the Philippine market.

According to Agudo, the market for cars could very well be flat next year. However, she sees an average growth of 15 per cent a year for five years probably as a result of what is seen as a final solution to the eurozone financial debacle.

Agudo pointed out that design is a key factor in fighting for a larger share of the domestic market. She said that the designs of the 12 models Hyundai sells in the Philippines are acceptable to the consumers as shown by increasing sales in spite of the 30 per cent tariff, tempered somewhat with subsidy.

The Blue Oval trademark has made Ford one of the world’s top brands, according to auto critic Giles Chapman. In 2004, Ford Motor was the 19th-most valuable brand, according to Businessweek magazine’s annual Global Brands Survey. Early this year, Ford Motor Co. matched Toyota Motor Corp. as the most favorably viewed auto brand by US consumers in a survey released by Consumer Reports magazine.

But such is expected, however, for this automobile company responsible for bringing to the world the iconic Model T in 1908—the car that would turn millions of Americans into motorists and integrate mass production into carmaking.

Today, despite stiff competition from Japanese, Korean and European automakers, Ford is still a formidable global player, keeping alive the dreams of the early American industrialists. In fact, Ford is the aggressor in the Asian car market. In the Philippines, in particular, the drum roll for Uncle Sam’s Blue Oval has become even louder. Not to sound cheesy, but we do feel a Fiesta coming on with this automaker.

So the young, aggressive executives at Ford Philippines have just declared that 2011 has been their year, claiming that they are the “fastest-growing automotive brand in the Philippines this year,” their overall year-to-date sales “continued to lead the industry.”

They have the numbers to back this claim up. The January to October 2010 and 2011 year-to-date sales figures supplied by Ford Philippines show that the blockbuster Fiesta enjoyed a 154-percent increase, the mid-sized SUV Everest 110 percent, the Explorer at 725 percent, the Ranger pickup at 105 percent, and the compact SUV Escape at 29 percent.

Ford Philippines said that 2011 has been a banner year. Its overall sales from January to October rose 50 percent year over-year to 7,963.

For the month of October, Ford’s retail sales jumped 101 percent year over year to 834 units, led by the continued success of the all-new Fiesta and popular Ford Everest, as well as the launch of the all-new Ford Explorer.

“To sustain our momentum, we will introduce eight more all-new One Ford vehicles in the Philippines over the next five years (the Ranger included)—significantly expanding our showroom lineup and introducing our brand to many new customer segments. The statement added that “this product-led transformation of our business was marked by the launch of the all-new Ford Fiesta.”

Ford Philippines announced yesterday its best all-time monthly performance in September with retail sales rising 57 to 965 units from a year ago.

In a statement, the firm said Ford’s record September was led by another robust month from the increasingly popular All-New Ford Fiesta, which delivered retail sales of 345 units — its best monthly performance since being launched last year.

On Oct. 15, Ford Philippines will celebrate the first anniversary of the class-leading Fiesta – Ford’s best-selling nameplate in the Philippines – with a grand get-together in Manila of Fiesta owners, Ford Club Philippines members and the Fiesta Facebook community.

“It’s so exciting to see these incredible sales numbers, and particularly the way our customers embrace the All-New Fiesta, which continues to be one of the leaders in the highly competitive small car segment,” said Randy Krieger, president, Ford Group Philippines.

The popular Ford Everest posted sales of 320 units in September, up 47 percent from a year ago and the strongest monthly sales since December 2009.

“These terrific numbers provide us with enormous confidence as we launch the All-New Explorer and gear up for the launch of the All-New Ford Ranger early next year, two vehicles we know that our customers will love,” Krieger said.

Ford’s overall sales continue to be robust, rising 45 percent year-over-year to 7,129 and making Ford the fastest growing automotive brand in the Philippines this year.

The All-New Fiesta has accounted for sales of 2,638 units year-to-date, while the Ford Everest has booked total retail sales of 2,091 units.

Ford Motor Company Philippines, the lone exporter of completely built-up (CBUs) vehicles in the country, will have to increase its local content to over 50% in order to continue enjoying incentives under the Auto Export Program (AEP).

Ford is the country’s lone volume CBU exporter being the only participant in the Automotive Export Program of the Board of Investments.

Under the newly crafted AEP which has yet to be signed by President Aquino, local exporters will only be able to enjoy incentives if the local content of their vehicles are 50% and above. The 50% local component will not include labor, only parts.

“We want to motivate Ford to go over 50%,” Board of Investments (BOI) managing head Cristino L. Panlilio told reporters in an interview.

Panlilio explained that under the old AEP that already lapsed, the local content was not an issue. Rather it was volume based.

“We would like to encourage car parts manufacturers to produce more by making car assemblers use more local content,” he explained. “The higher the local content, the higher the tax credit.”

As of now, Panlilio said Ford is not receiving any incentives to export but continues to sell overseas. Data released by FGP showed that exports for January to March 2011 stood at 1,816 units, higher than the 1,704 units exported during the same period in 2010.

Ford is exporting Focus, Escape and Mazda 3. The Focus and Escape are being sold in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand while the Mazda 3 goes to Thailand.

Earlier, Panlilio said the government will cut in half the export requirement in the AEP in an attempt to encourage more local manufacturers to sell CBUs overseas.

“We are looking at cutting in half the quota in the export plan,” Panlilio said. Firms must be able to export 10,000 units in order to avail of the incentives.

“It is harder to export because of the conditions and the agreements (free trade agreements) that the government is entering,” Panlilio said. “We are still studying the possible solution to this problem.” He said that even with incentives it has been difficult to export vehicles.

“What is the point of coming out with the export program if no one will avail. We have to think out of the box now,” Panlilio added.

Car manufacturers have already submitted their position paper to the BOI. Auto firms asked the government to strengthen the domestic base before encouraging firms to export locally manufactured vehicles (LMV).

The Philippine subsidiary of U.S. carmaker Ford Motor Company has announced a suspension of operations until May 8 amid reports of supply shortages of automotive parts.

Car parts supplies for the Ford facility, like other automotive firms in the Philippines, come from suppliers in Japan whose own operations had been disrupted by the massive earthquake and tsunami in early March.

The same predicament, a limited supply of parts, has been invoked by Toyota Motor Corp.’s Philippine subsidiary for a three-day downtime set for next week. The move will result in a factory closure for the entire week since April 21 and 22 (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday) are holidays in the Philippines.

Toyota’s parent company in Japan had earlier announced plans for the suspension of production at facilities in Europe “for several days late in May and early May” because of parts shortages.

Expected to be affected by the Toyota operations halt are two engine factories in Britain and Poland and three assembly plants in Britain, France and Turkey.

The work suspension at Ford, which started on April 11, effectively moves up the Philippine assembly plant’s 18 scheduled down days for the year as a strategy to ensure its supply of automotive parts in the coming months, the company said.

Any further production freeze beyond these scheduled downtime, said the company, will depend on market demand, including the export market.

Ford Motor said early this week in a regulatory filing in the U.S. it expected its operations in the Asia Pacific area to slow or even stop due to parts shortages from Japan.

Ford Group Philippines is one of the U.S. carmaker’s 13 plants in the Asia-Pacific region. The Philippine plant is said to be the country’s only exporter of completely built units.

Just last week, Ford Philippines reported a 74 percent surge in its first-quarter sales to the domestic market, reaching 2,387 vehicles compared to 1,375 units it registered in the same period last year.

The company said its exports over the same period increased by 7 percent, to 1,816 units this year compared to 1,704 units last year.

Ford Philipppines exports Ford Focus, Ford Escape, and Mazda 3 mainly to Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. For the full year 2010, the local Ford plant’s exports totaled 9,858 units, higher by 35 percent from the 2009 mark, the company has previously reported.

Ford Philippines yesterday reported that exports of locally assembled cars rose 7 percent in the first quarter of the year.

Exports of Ford Focus, Ford Escape and Mazda 3 during the period went up to 1,816 units from 1,704 units in the same period in 2010.

The growth rate for the period is slightly slower than the 35 percent growth chalked up for the entire 2010, a record year for exports.

Total exports of these vehicles stood at 9,858 units last year.

Randy Krieger, Ford Philippines president, said the company would continue exports of these vehicles.

Ford is the lone exporter and participant in the government’s Automotive Export Program (AEP). It has so far exported 75,000 vehicles since 2002 valued at more than $860 million.

Krieger said the company has no plans to increase the current 36,000 units of annual production at its Sta. Rosa plant.

Krieger said Ford is happy with the existing AEP as it enables the carmaker to export completely built-up (CBU) units to Asean.

Ford is set to produce the next-generation Focus in its Thailand hub by 2012 and is still studying other products that it may produce from the Laguna plant.

Local sales grew 74 percent in the quarter from 1,375 units last year to 2,387 units, the strongest quarterly sales.

The Department of Trade and Industry is working on extending the AEP through an executive order.

Krieger noted that both the AEP and the Motor Vehicle Development Program are crucial in helping automotive firms make their plans in the country but highlighted the need to make the Philippines more cost competitive against Indonesia and Thailand.

Factors for consideration include the Philippines’ small domestic market, higher electricity rates and low supply base.

Ford Group Philippines reported its strongest quarterly sales in the first three months of the year.

In a press briefing Friday announcing the One Ford plan, Ford president Randy Krieger said first quarter sales reached 2,387 units, a growth of 74 percent from 1,375 units a year ago

Krieger said Ford chalked up higher sales on rising demand for the Fiesta and Everest, its two most popular models, selling 799 and 719 units, respectively.

Sales figures for March alone totalled 881 units, 66 percent higher versus March 2010 sales of 532 units. Krieger said this represents two consecutive months of record-breaking sales for the firm.

Krieger said Ford expect to finish the year with a double-digit sales growth, faster than the industry which only expects a four percent growth.

Ford Philippines plans to introduce 9 products, 8 of which are global products within five years under the One Ford Plan.

In the beginning of the year, Ford Philippines launched the Expedition business class (see main story).

Krieger said Ford Philippines will double its network capacity in strategic locations across the country to support its growth over the next five to 10 years.

Four Ford dealerships will be welcomed to the network this year: Tacloban which opened in March; Lipa and Minglanilla, Cebu.

Ford Philippines also anticipates its participation at this month’s 7th Manila International Motor Show where it would occupy the biggest display showcasing 15 fuel-efficient cars, high quality cars, sport utility vehicles (SUV) and trucks.

Also this quarter, Ford would expand the highly-successful 24-hour parts guarantee program for the Focus and Fiesta to cover all Asean-built units – Focus, Fiesta, Escape, Ranger and Everest at any authorized Ford dealer in Metro Manila.

Ford Philippines would also have this quarter’s Drive One campaign which simplifies customer’s purchasing decision and process with a strategy called “One Price and Upsize.” At multiple all-in price points, customers are given flexibility of choice to pick a car, SUV, or truck and the option to upgrade.

Krieger said Ford Philippines may consider expansion plans or production of new models here after the passage of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the Motor Vehicle Development Plan (MVDP).

For Ford exports, Krieger also said the company would continue to export locally manufactured vehicles. Ford is the lone exporter as participant in the government’s Automotive Export Program (AEP).

So far, Ford has exported 75,000 vehicles.

More carmakers are now offering models based on a global platform to reduce costs while at same time paying attention to the local needs. PT Ford Motor Indonesia (FMI) currently invites The Jakarta Post’s Novan Iman Santosa and number of other Indonesian journalists to Bangkok to attend the launch of Ford Ranger pickup truck as well as the Bangkok International Motor Show 2011.

American carmaker Ford Motor Company, the only one that escaped the 2008 financial crisis, launched its next generation global compact pickup truck, the All-New Ford Ranger in Bangkok on March 23 in a launching event inviting journalists from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam in addition to host Thailand.

The new Ranger will be made at the Auto Alliance Thailand (AAT) facility in Rayong, Thailand with an investment of some US$50 million, Ford ASEAN president Peter Fleet told reporters at the launch event.

Thailand will be accompanied by Argentina and South Africa as the production centers for the new Ranger to be sold in 180 countries.

“The production will start sometimes mid this year,” he said.

Australia and New Zealand will get the new Ranger in the third quarter this year followed by Thailand in the fourth quarter.

Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam will get the pickup truck in the first quarter of 2012.

Ranger will then be followed by the All-New Ford Focus, which has been marketed in the region.

Fleet said the remaining six other models will be “completely new and have never been sold” in the region.

PT FMI president director Will Angove said the new Ranger will only enter Indonesia in March followed by All-New Focus in July.

Meanwhile, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa president Joe Hinrichs said compact trucks were global phenomenon with similar and consistent requirement throughout all markets across the world.

“Customers want truck toughness and capability. They don’t want a car,” he said.

In a separate interview after the launch event, Hinrichs said Ford was very excited with the growth in Indonesia.

“We believe the Indonesian market can surpass Thailand this decade,” he told Indonesian journalists.

“Rest assured, we watch closely the Indonesian market.”

When asked on whether Ford would sell an multipurpose vehicle (MPV) model in Indonesia, Hinrichs said there was nothing to announce today.

“But we understand where the volume is in Indonesia,” he said.

While Thailand is known as the world’s largest market for pickup truck, the Indonesian market prefers the MPV more.

This year the Indonesian automotive market is forecast to be between 800,000 to 850,000. There were around 745,000 vehicles sold in 2010.

On the possibility of opening a manufacturing plant in Indoensia, Fleet said Ford’s first priority was to get the Thailand plant up and running.

“We have a policy to open a manufacturing plant only after the sales reach certain numbers,” he said.

Ford also has no plans yet to market its hybrid models in ASEAN although the carmaker has several hybrid models.

As for PT FMI’s plan this year, the company would also focus on expanding its dealers network in anticipation of the new models.

“Currently we have 33 dealers across the nation including the recently opened in Manokwari, West Papua,” Angove told Indonesian journalists.

“We will open eight more in on Jl. Pemuda and in Cibubur, Bekasi and Tangerang in the Greater Jakarta area as well as in Batam, Cirebon, Kudus and Tegal.”

Angove added the dealers in Bekasi and Tangerang would cost Rp 30 billion built on a plot of land of about 4,000 square meters.

“We aim to have some 100 dealers in five years,” he added.

He emphasized that Ford paid so much attention to customers’s satisfaction.

“We try to solve any complaints on the same day. We will fly our mechanic to cities where the local dealers cannot fix a problem,” he said.

PT FMI sold 8,871 vehicles in 2010 with Angove declining to reveal this year’s sales forecast. He only said that the company sold some 500 to 600 of Ford Fiesta hatchbacks every month.
