Reuters: UAW pressuring Tesla/Toyota to hire union workers at former NUMMI plant

Yesterday, Toyota and Tesla announced that the two companies would be collaborating on electric vehicle development. Tesla will be taking over the NUMMI factory in Fremont, California, which was recently closed. Now, the United Auto Workers is urging Toyota to hire union workers to operate the plant, giving jobs back to the people who were rendered unemployed after the NUMMI shutdown.

UAW president Ron Gettelfinger has issued the following statement:

“Our union’s hope is that this venture will give first hiring preference to former NUMMI employees who are already trained and highly skilled.”

As you’ll recall, NUMMI was closed at the beginning of April after the Toyota/General Motors joint venture fizzled, a development that left roughly 4,500 union workers unemployed. Thus, it only makes sense that the UAW would be fighting to reinstate these workers’ jobs now that Tesla plans to build its Model S sedan at this facility.

  1. Toyota and GM left the loyal nummi team members and there families on the streets,
and they did not offer to relocate them to other plants that were in operation, the least that tesla and toyota can do is to show some respect to the nummi workers by offering them first choice to return at half the pay and no pension that they were getting at Nummi.
Toyota lost respect in the auto industry because they always dictated
mutual trust and respect and job security, that is why the Nummi workers were loyal to the end(until the ship went down). Toyota needs to save face with the auto industry in this country,if it plans to stay here and sell here, it must have a loyal workforce , not a dictator with no regaurds to family or the right for americans to form a union without closing the auto plants. They like the profits but do not want to share them with the american workers that worked under the toyoda family name. why are our politicians allowing this to happen, do you think for one minute that other countries would allow this, the USA is not a trading post, it is a country until the politicians sold us out with the free trade agreement, what happened to fair trade for the USA, we can not compete with other countries (some workers in other countries make only $1.00 a day) without the help of our politicians. Why can’t we take our own country back? When are americans going to fight back and defend our country? If we stand up for our rights they call us trouble makers, who is really the trouble makers? where are all the good jobs and pay going ? why all all the american people brain washed, I guess it must be all the chemicals that are in our water and food that is regulated by our politicians. “WAKE UP”.
Now the scabs and foreigners will write in the next post saying how crazy I am,
do not believe them they are the enemy of the people of this country.
