Nisaan Philippine Distributor Eyes 4-5% Growth This Year

Nissan Philippine Distributor
Universal Motors Corp (UMC), exclusive assembler and distributor of Nissan commercial vehicles in the Philippines, said the company eyes 4 to 5 percent growth in sales despite temporary disruption in production due to lack of parts supply.

Elizabeth Lee, chief executive officer of UMC told reporters on the sidelines of the 5th anniversary celebration of the Ur Van, Ur Business at the Market!Market! Friday, that the company expects production to normalize by July.

UMC scaled down production this month.

Lee said stocks will thin out in June as she expects demand to slightly outpace supply.

Lee said UMC hopes to recover lost sales in the remaining part of the year.

“We are not downgrading our forecast,” Lee said.

She added that other factors are affecting UMC sales, such as the strengthening of the yen which is balanced by the strengthening of the peso; manageable inflation despite rising gas prices and decline in OFW remittances.

UMC assembles locally the Urvan and the Navara pick-up.

UMC targets 202 units average monthly sales for the Urvan, lower than the 224 units in 2010 average last year’s average of 224e said monthly average sales should be about 20.

“2010 was a high sales year due to the elections,” Lee said.

UMC sold 6,065 units in 2010, up almost 20 percent from the previous year.

Meanwhile, Lee noted how UMC’s “Ur Van, Ur Business” (UVUB) program, the automotive industry’s first entrepreneurship corporate social responsibility program has since evolved from its inception in 2006.

UVUB targets individuals who are actively seeking for viable means to supplement their income and now includes Ipadala Mo Negosyo targeting overseas Filipino workers and Asenso Negosyo Academy or ANA where periodic seminars were conducted to impart necessary knowledge and skills to ensure the continuance and success of Nissan Urvan businesses.

To date, UVUB has helped 5,600 families and generated 7,000 direct jobs.

Through a long-standing partnership with the non-profit organization Center for Community Transformation or CCT, P1, 000. 00 is donated to the latter for every Nissan Urvan sold under the program. This helps in providing seed money assistance to micro-entrepreneurs and funding EntrepSkwela, an entrepreneurship training program conducted at the grassroots level.
