MMDA: U-turn Slot Speeds up C-5 Road Travel by 90%
The traffic flow along C-5/Kalayaan Road has shown dramatic improvement over the past two weeks due to an elevated U-turn slot in the area, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) officials said.
MMDA officials said travel speed from Lawton, Manila to Buting, Pasig has reportedly increased from 17.93 to 34.14 kilometers per hour (kph), reflecting a 90 percent improvement in travel time.
From Pasig to Manila, travel also became faster by 14 percent, with a speed from 19.45 kph to 22.14 kph due to the project, they said.
Statistics showed that travel speed from Commando link in Taguig to Lanuza, Pasig also increased by 54 percent, from 28.85 kph to 44.3 kph.
The southbound lane from Pasig City to Global City also improved in travel speed by 107 percent, from 17.16 kph to 35.45 kph.
MMDA officials, led by Chairman Bayani Fernando, said the elevated U-turn slot in C-5/Kalayaan is working effectively.
Records showed that 153,796 vehicles pass through the area everyday based on a 2007 vehicle volume count by the agency’s Traffic Engineering Center (TEC).
The MMDA now expects 237,993 vehicles to use the elevated U-turn slot daily, which, it said, will not be a problem for as long as a second similar structure opens in the area.
The second elevated U-turn project will benefit northbound motorists who also use the C-5/Kalayaan road from the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) to Ortigas and Quezon City and vice versa.
MMDA officials said it will also be useful for vehicles coming from Pateros to Makati City and Pateros to the SLEX.

This made sense.. lalo na ung papuntang market market.. everyday ako dumdaan dito.. coz i work in fort.. bad thing is the way going back to pasig.. ung mga jeep kasi allowed na mag left turn going to kalayaan.. so minsan na babarahan nila ung pasig way.. but all in all elevated U turn made sense base on my daily experience.
I drive my car from Antipolo at Felix Ave. (near Sta Lucia) to the Global City five times a week for the last eleven years now. I use C-5 Road 5 days a week and I pass the C-5–Buting intersection twice a day.
The traffic brought about by the construction of these two elevated U-Turns in said intersection is perhaps slightly better than the old stoplight system. Even on this day, 30 April 2009, when one of the u-turn slot is already operational, traffic contenue to hound the motorist passing this intersection, especialy during rush hours.
Did you know that the biggest volume of vehicular traffic in the country passes through the EDSA-NLEX intersection in Balintawk? Of course, that is easy to see!
But have you noticed that the same intersection does not have any single stoplight nor a single policeman/ traffic enforcer directing traffic (there are policemen somewhere the cloverleaf doing something, but that is intirely a different story)? Of course, that is also easy to see!
Have you notice that traffic in the area is generally good to excelent in most days? Have you ever wondered why government insist on using flyovers and elevated u-turn structures instead of a clover-leaf design intersection? Of course, that is not easy to see! Does comparative “cost” on these options have anything to do with the decision? Your guess is as good as mine.
There you are, it is self explanatory!
This cloverleaf idea is not an original one. I just borrowed it from the late Gen. Percival Adiong, former Traffic Management Group top honcho during Pres. Cory’s time. May the good General rest in peace but not his idea on cloverleaf!
