To promote alternatives to fossil fuels, the city of Makati will showcase its electric jeepneys in a motorcade of electric vehicles on April 22, Earth Day.

Makati will join the “Byaheng Malinis, Byaheng Kay Ganda [A Clean, Beautiful Trip],” a motorcade around Metro Manila to advocate the use of vehicles powered by engines that do not use fossil fuels, which cause pollution and global warming.

The country’s financial district is known for rolling out the Philippines’ first electric-powered jeepneys in 2007.

In the motorcade are four electric bicycles, a dozen electric scooters, an electric car, three electric tricycles and eight electric jeepneys, along with contestants of the Miss Philippines Earth 2009.

Portions of Roxas Boulevard, Edsa and Shaw Boulevard are included in the
motorcade’s route, which will end at the Legaspi Mini Park in Makati.

Assembly time is at 6:30 a.m. in the vicinity of National Statistics Office and Hobbies of Asia, Diosdado Macapagal Avenue, Pasay City.

The motorcade is jointly sponsored by the Green Renewable Independent Power Producer, a civic group organized by exponents of Greenpeace; the Miss Philippines Earth group, and the Makati city government.

As part of Earth Day celebrations, Makati also served as one of the pit stops in the 11th Tour of the Fireflies on Sunday, wherein around 5,000 participants conducted a 50-kilometer bike ride around Metro Manila.

“The annual Tour of the Fireflies has served as a constant reminder of our individual and collective duty to take care of the environment. The widely noted disappearance of fireflies from polluted places should be sufficient warning for us to do our part and become active environmental advocates, lest we suffer the same fate,” said Danilo Villas, chief of the Makati Department of Environmental Services.

The annual Tour of the Fireflies, with its convoy of costumed bicycle riders, passes through different cities to raise awareness on the need for clean air and promote the use of bicycles as a cheap, efficient, and environmentally sensible form of transportation.

Makati’s participants in this year’s tour included Makati Cycling Federation, Makati Road Runners, Bigay Pagmamahal Scholars, and the Liga ng mga Barangay ng Makati.

Earth day is an interesting event. An empty road free from cars.

    I have a question and a comment.

This electric jeep is the solution to fuel dependency, i hope and pray the giant fuel companies will not do anything to prevent the hopefully nationwide distibution. Are these electric jeeps/vehicles available in the market and how much?
    Thanks.
