Isuzu Turns Over Brand-New Vehicles to Tesda

October 17, 2008 by Tsikot

The Isuzu Auto Mechanic Workshop Building, an ambitious automotive training program for the needy in the south built by a partnership spearheaded by Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC), is all geared up for its opening next month in Tacloban, Leyte.

This is after IPC, headed by its president Keiji Takeda, recently turned over two brand-new Isuzu vehicles to the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) in Taguig.

“Isuzu is giving something to Tesda Tacloban. That something is the gift of mobility. Isuzu Philippines is donating one NHR Passenger Van while Isuzu Motors Ltd. of Japan is giving one Crosswind XTi to help the agency in providing quality technical education to the underprivileged youth. Both vehicles will be used to shuttle employees and students of the training center,” said Takeda, who added that Tesda is Isuzu’s partner together with Plan International, a nongovernment humanitarian agency.

“The training center is an ‘Isuzu Heart & Smile Project,’ a global humanitarian and environmental campaign launched by Isuzu Motors Ltd. to commemorate its 70th anniversary. The project also benefits Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan. Isuzu supports six primary schools for underprivileged kids in Kupang, Indonesia, and 14 primary and middle schools for mountain tribe children in Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam. In Japan, Isuzu is helping to rehabilitate Mount Fuji, the country’s proud symbol, since its ecosystem has been destroyed by both human activity and nature,” Takeda also said.

In his final words before turning over the vehicles, Takeda said: “May these hard-working and reliable vehicles be of great assistance to you as you carry out the noble deed of educating the less fortunate Filipino youth!”

Attending the turnover ceremony were IPC vice president for corporate business Arthur Balmadrid and other Isuzu officials, Tesda officials led by deputy director for field operations Roger Peyuan, Plan Philippines country director Michael Joseph Diamond and other Tesda employees and trainees.

The two vehicles—an Isuzu passenger van that seats 17 persons, which is ideal for those in the shuttle and delivery business, and a Crosswind XTi, which is a perennial favorite among hard-working entrepreneurs, according to Arthur Balmadrid—have already been transported to Leyte.

They shall form a very important part of the Isuzu Auto Mechanic Building in Abucay, Tacloban City, which will be formally inaugurated on November 18. The P130-million project shall have workshops, a men’s and ladies’ dormitory, a multipurpose covered court and a cafeteria. The first batch of trainees will be reporting on November 5 and will finish their training in May 2010.

Plan International, through its country and regional offices, undertook the pre-operation phase of the project including civil works, procurement of tools and equipment and provision of office furniture.
On the other hand, IPC donated tools and equipment and is also the lead group in the training of automotive trainers for this specialized training center.

For his part, Tesda’s Peyuan expressed his group’s gratitude to all those who helped in the realization of the project. “In behalf of Secretary Augusto Syjuco, I gladly accept the donation with the assurance to the donors that we will put to good and purposive use these vehicles. I wish to assure our friends from Isuzu that we will accord these vehicles the tender loving care that they deserve so that their service life will be extended to the fullest.”

Peyuan added, “Through this project, the donors and Tesda will surely be spreading smiles and goodwill to the target beneficiaries—trainees in automotive servicing for the whole range of skills competencies for National Level Certificates I to IV. Automotive-service technician graduates are guaranteed skills, plus, they are capable of servicing the latest vehicle models in the market.”

With some 3 million young people in the country unable to receive good education and more than 5 million motor vehicles registered each year, Isuzu saw a demand for auto technicians that can easily be filled up by the country’s underprivileged youth, who shall be served by the Isuzu Auto Mechanic Workshop Building in that part of the country.
