Driver’s Blog #1
by sundaydriver (blog entry )
they say driving is one of man's simplest joys. i remember seeing an ad for the VW Golf which ended with the tagline "when was the last time you just went for a drive?" thinking about it i never did…especially here in manila. why? 'coz everywhere you look drivers are breaking the rules, testing your patience and jacking up your blood pressure.

one day in makati i found myself across one of many countless mini-stops. a taxi parked right outside the store, its hazard lights flashing. the driver jumped out and bought something from inside. within seconds a tow-truck pulled right beside it and 3 men jumped out to begin reeling it in. expectedly the driver ran back out and began this long stream of curses. the argument became ugly and soon a fistfight occurred much to everyone's entertainment. instinctively i would've rooted for the taxi driver. i believe these makati sharks are just a bit too impulsive for comfort.
but what really got me was while the driver was wrestling with makati's yellow-boy, a bored-looking tow operator was continuously lifting the taxi onto the truck. another day's job apparently. that got me thinking. the taxi driver DID break the rules. 5 minutes or 5 hours…it didn't matter…he parked in a no-parking slot. so at the end of the day the yellow-boy was actually doing his job…efficiently at that.
maybe we're too quick to get mad when we're at fault. we immediately blame authorities for being too strict. "di mapakiusapan" as they say. but i think that's the only way to get people to follow the rules. as they say discipline is the solution to our country's problems. if i were in the taxi driver's shoes would i fight back? most likely. would i be wrong? definitely. think about it. i think everyone would do the same.
