Any time a journalist begins waxing poetic about automotive styling, you can pretty much hear designers’ eyes spinning in their sockets. I’ve satisfied lots of automotive scribes with a master’s diploma in mechanical engineering, but I’ve yet to shake hands with 1 packing a style sheepskin. Granted, the regular vehicle purchaser is greater served by an individual with an intimate knowledge of liquid thermodynamics and the finer details of suspension geometry. But then along arrives some thing like the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS550 and we just do not have the vocabulary.
Stepping out for a smoke with the lead automotive artist from Mercedes’ Sophisticated Layout Studio, it’s hard not to appear at the 2nd-generation CLS and start off taking part in styling critic. The play amongst light and shadow the sculpted rear haunches the character line that rises then plummets from the headlamps, across the fenders and terminates in the rear doorways. Who am I kidding? I am of no station to make you endure countless, uneducated platitudes cribbed from the vehicle-as-artwork schtick. I just know the new CLS looks damned great from any angle, specially the the waning sunlight of California’s Napa Valley.
But here’s the kicker: The design and style is nearly 7 decades aged.
