Toyota Philippines to Raise Price of Innova on Higher Costs

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP), the country’s largest automobile distributor, said the price of Innova may go up as a result of higher operational cost because the income tax holiday (ITH) being given by the government expired last March.
In an interview, TMP vice president Rommel Gutierrez said they have already asked the Board of Investments (BOI) for an extension of their four-year ITH to six years.
Gutierrez said that initially, BOI classified Innova as a non pioneer project. But given that it is an Asian vehicle, Gutierrez said that it can be re-classified as a pioneering project. Under the law, pioneer projects are given six years ITH, he said. Read more
Makati City to showcase E-jeepneys on Earth Day

To promote alternatives to fossil fuels, the city of Makati will showcase its electric jeepneys in a motorcade of electric vehicles on April 22, Earth Day.
Makati will join the “Byaheng Malinis, Byaheng Kay Ganda [A Clean, Beautiful Trip],” a motorcade around Metro Manila to advocate the use of vehicles powered by engines that do not use fossil fuels, which cause pollution and global warming.
The country’s financial district is known for rolling out the Philippines’ first electric-powered jeepneys in 2007. Read more
RP-Made Vintage Jeep Takes Center Stage in Taiwan Auto Show
A vintage Willys military jeep is the centerpiece of Philippine-made motor vehicle parts and accessories on display at the Philippine Pavilion of the 2009 Taipei International Auto Parts (AMPA) running from April 14 to 17, 2009 at the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taiwan.
The display is a joint project of the Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (MVPMAP), the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
“It is the first time for the Philippines to participate in the Taipei AMPA Show, considered as the premier auto parts show in Asia. This is also significant as this is the first time that local auto parts makers have banded together to participate in an international trade exhibit of this magnitude. Read more
Automakers Upbeat as Car Sales Dip Only 1.2% in Q1 of 2009
Domestic automotive sales dipped slightly in the first quarter from year-ago levels, with a modest rise in the passenger car segment cushioning a fall for commercial vehicles, industry data released on Wednesday showed.
The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) hailed the sector’s performance, citing a steeper 37% sales plunge in the United States.
The local auto industry — tagged by the government as a significant contributor to output, employment, investments and exports — sold 28,565 units in the first three months of 2009, down 1.2% compared to a year earlier. Read more
Manila International Auto Show: Five Years and Going Strong
Perhaps the longest-running auto show in the country, the Manila International Auto Show (Mias), organized by the Worldbex group under the auspices of Joseph Ang, has now celebrated its fifth year in another grand fashion.
Performing for the annual car show again is world Guinness record holder for precision driving Russ Swift, who wowed the crowd during the four-day affair that lasted from April 2 to 4.
Pulling in a little under 100,000 visitors from all walks of life, the Mias has been the most consistent car show in the country, coming out with an annual event since 2005, even after all the other competitors have folded and gone dry.

CAMPI: Automobile Sales Up 19% in March

Automobile sales went up by 19 percent in March from a month ago level as a stable financial environment helped consumers borrow money in order to purchase vehicles, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturing of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) said.
”The local industry’s resiliency and very strong March performance is an indication of consumers’ positive economic outlook reflected in the 19 percent increase in March auto purchases on top of the 2.7 percent increase in Feb purchases and January’s flat growth. We are hopeful that the positive trend will continue,” CAMPI president Elizabeth H. Lee said.
“So far, our auto industry continues to buck the general global trend and continues on a growth path. We continue to be optimistic and do everything we can to maintain competitive prices, offer vehicles packages at affordable rates that serve consumers’ vehicle needs,” Lee said. Read more

Construction of Skyway Extension Begins

Citra Metro Manila Tollways Corp. recently announced that it will start construction on the second stage of the Skyway by the end of the week.
Stage two will extend the existing 9.5-kilometer Buendia-Bicutan elevated toll road by about seven kilometers, from Bicutan to Alabang. The construction area at the median section of the toll road in Bicutan will be initially extended to Sucat and fenced off with concrete barriers. While three travel lanes in both directions from Bicutan to Alabang will be maintained, buses and trucks must stay on the center lane only and Class 1 vehicles (cars, jeeps, light pickups or sport utility vehicles) can use the narrowed inner and outer lanes until after the construction area in the northbound direction.
During construction, motorists are advised to factor in longer travel time. The project’s traffic manager, Skyway O & M Corp. (SOMCO), is providing additional traffic enforcers round the clock to guide and assist motorists. Construction and safety signages and devices are also installed strategically at the approaches to and within the project site. SOMCO will also implement traffic counterflow during peak traffic hours. Motorists are reminded not to swerve abruptly when switching lanes. Towing services will be provided by the Automobile Association of the Philippines. Read more
